TIGERS CLOSE IN ON PLAY-OFFS

Thursday September 13, 2007
TIGERS are a win away from reaching the Premier League play-offs after a superb 62-32 win over Workington at Owlerton on Thursday.

With the Comets also in the hunt for a top four finish in the Premier League, Sheffield signalled their intent by easily claiming all three points on offer.

Sheffield turned in an uncompromising display, with the bonus point in the bag after just four heats - the Comets having won by eight points at Derwent Park in July - and any fears that the Cumbrian side might derail their title ambitions were simply blown away.

Skipper Andre Compton was back to his untouchable best with a 15-point maximum while Ben Wilson's only defeat by an opponent came in the last race when he was beaten by Ulrich Ostergaard.

But it was a comprehensive effort by the Tigers, including a super paid 9 from reserve guest Ben Powell, deputising for the injured James Birkinshaw.

Said team boss Reg Wilson: "If we can keep up this sort of form then there's no reason why we can't go all the way.

"We easily took the three points to keep us in the play-off race and a home win against Newport should make certain.

"It will be tough, but the good news is that we are peaking at the right time and I don't think anyone will fancy taking us on from now onwards."

SHEFFIELD: Andre Compton 15, Ben Wilson 12+1, Paul Cooper 8+2, Ben Powell 8+1, Ricky Ashworth 8+1, Joel Parsons 6+2, James Cockle 4.
WORKINGTON: James Wright 10+1, Ulrich Ostergaard 10, Charles Wright 6, Kauko Nieminen 3, Craig Branney 2, John Branney 1+1, Mattia Carpanese R/R.
