EASTBOURNE REACTION + SUNDAY BUILD-UP

Saturday August 31, 2019
SHEFFIELD suffered last heat heartache as they lost 46-44 at Eastbourne.

Tigers were involved in a titanic tussle against the home Arlington specialists and looked on the verge of pulling off a
sensational away victory as they led by two-points with a race to go.
But Tigers conceded a last gasp 5-1 as they let what would have been an invaluable away win slip.
It was a case of so near yet so far for Tigers with returning American Broc Nicol proving to be the star of the show with a 17-point haul.
But the side were also dealt a bitter blow as skipper Kyle Howarth suffered a disclosed shoulder.
Team boss Simon Stead said: “Obviously we’re bitterly disappointed not to end up with the win because we were in a good position.
“But we’ve let some silly points slip again and we’ve had a bit of bad luck along the way.
“We’ve taken a lot of criticism for getting rid of Drew (Kemp) in the past few days but I think Broc’s performance tonight proved that what we did was right.
“We have an obligation to the Sheffield supporters and to the league to fight until it’s mathematically impossible and being able to bring in Broc in at reserve on tracks he goes well at proved a massive advantage to us.
“He was superb tonight and had it not been for a few silly points thrown away we’d be leaving Eastbourne with a vital away win.
“But we’re still in the mix and we can take plenty of positives from this into our final few meetings of the season.
“Obviously it’s a blow with what happened to Kyle and he was in a fair bit of discomfort but we’ll wait and see how he is.”
After being called up on Saturday morning, Howarth has now been ruled out of Sunday’s Championship Riders’ Individual (5pm start) with former Tiger and Scunthorpe favourite Josh Auty now receiving a late call up.
Gates open at Owlerton at 3.30 on Sunday for the star-studded event with Danny King holding the hopes for the home Sheffield fans.
