CHAMPIONSHIP PAIRS PREVIEW

Thursday September 19, 2019
SHEFFIELD star Danny King is looking to give the Window Centre Tigers a successful end to the season in Friday’s Championship Pairs at Somerset.

The former British Champion teams up with skipper Kyle Howarth with both riders having previously won the event – King in the colours of Ipswich at the Oaktree Arena in 2015.

Howarth, meanwhile, triumphed alongside Lasse Bjerre for Sheffield in a re-arranged event at Owlerton in 2017.

And after finishing runner-up in both the British Final and the Championship Riders’ Individual, and with the Tigers missing out on a play-off spot, King wants to finish his first campaign with the Yorkshire club on a high.

He said: “I’ve thoroughly enjoyed my season at Sheffield and it would be good to end the season by winning some silverware for the club.

“The Championship this year is the strongest it has been for a long time and the Pairs will be no different - I know how tough it’s going to be.

“Hopefully Kyle is back to full fitness as we need both him and myself firing right from the off - we’ll certainly give it our best shot.”

Tigers face a tough start in the showpiece event as the draw for their four qualifying races see them take on hosts Somerset, Leicester, Birmingham and Berwick.

King and Howarth are first on-track in Heat 2 against home duo Rory Schlein and Nick Morris, and they then race in Heats 6, 12 and 20.

They need to be in the top four after the qualifiers in order to progress to the semi-finals.
