PREVIEW: TIGERS v WOLVERHAMPTON

Wednesday June 07, 2023
SHEFFIELD kick off a busy run of home fixtures as they stage the first leg of their Sports Insure Premiership Knockout Cup Semi-Final against Wolverhampton on Thursday (June 8, 7.30).

It’s the first of three straight Thursday meetings at Owlerton as the Tru Plant Tigers finally begin to ramp up more regular action in the Steel City.

The tie against the Wolves promises to be a thriller as well with both sides building momentum heading into the first leg.

The Midlanders have lost just one of their last six fixtures in all competitions – and picked up their first away win of the season at Ipswich last week.

Meanwhile, Sheffield charged back into form with back-to-back wins over King’s Lynn; they hit the 60-point barrier last time out at Owlerton a fortnight ago before recording their biggest ever Premiership win in Norfolk last Thursday.

And while he acknowledges the strength of their opponents, Tigers’ team boss Simon Stead wants his riders to carry over their confidence ahead of the return in the West Midlands on Monday, June 19.

Said Stead: “I’ve always said that Wolverhampton over two legs is always a tricky prospect no matter how good you are or what sort of run you are on.

“They’re another side who appear to be growing in confidence week-by-week, but you all know where I stand with things like that now when we’ve got a side like we’ve got here at Sheffield – if we stick to our task, focus on ourselves and do what we know we can do, then we have every chance of getting past them and making it into the Final.

“Both the home and away results against King’s Lynn were just what we needed, I felt they came at just the right time for us and they were a big boost for the lads.

“They were two performances and results which I think the boys can take a lot of confidence from and it gives us a real platform to build from again.”

Sheffield return to full strength with David Bellego back in the side following a recent mandatory period on the sidelines through concussion protocols.

Sheffield Speedway would like to reiterate that Season Tickets are NOT valid for the Knockout Cup at Owlerton this season.

A reminder that children aged 17 and under will be admitted for just £1 throughout 2023 with adult admission set at £22 while it’s £20 for concessions.

SHEFFIELD: Tobiasz Musielak, Lewis Kerr, Adam Ellis, David Bellego, Jack Holder, Kyle Howarth, Dan Gilkes.
WOLVERHAMPTON: Sam Masters, Steve Worrall, Luke Becker, Ryan Douglas, Rory Schlein, Zach Cook, Leon Flint.
