BRITISH SPEEDWAY WEEKLY ROUND-UP

Tuesday May 27, 2008
WELCOME to the latest edition of the weekly BSPA bulletins keeping you in touch with news, views and fixtures from the tracks up and down the country.

ELITE LEAGUE LATEST…

BELLE VUE'S unlucky reserve Steve Boxall is facing more time out of action with the shoulder injury he initially sustained at the end of March.

Aces chief David Gordon said: "Steve saw a specialist in France last week and we had hoped he would then have an operation. But, instead, he was sent for a second opinion and still hasn't had an operation.

"It appears now that a ligament has snapped and pulled away a piece of bone so we just don't know how long he'll be out."

COVENTRY owner Allen Trump says the club still have plenty to go for this season after an inconsistent run of results so far.

Trump said: "I feel we are turning the corner, and that will continue when Olly Allen comes back from injury and he's scoring his nine points at home.

"We've made the Craven Shield Final, which was a big high against Poole in the semi, and Lakeside won't catch us again like they did in our last home meeting. I believe we have a lot to look forward to."

EASTBOURNE have elected to hold off from making changes having heard that skipper Lee Richardson should be back in action early next month - although co-promoter Bob Dugard admits he is still worried about the Eagles' lower-order strength.

Dugard said: "It's good news about Lee. Our top five have been firing but I am still really concerned we are weak at the bottom end.

"There is not much we can do with the points we have to play with but the lower limit was always going to open up gaps."

IPSWICH skipper Steve Johnston says all at the club will keep their feet on the ground despite a magnificent run of results to take the Witches to the top of the Elite League table.

Johnston said: "The wins we have had on the road have been superb, bearing in mind they haven't been trouble-free. At Wolverhampton we had about five bikes in bits and were all over the place, but we have come through.

"However, it's early days. Let's not get carried away, as there is a long way to go. It's been a superb week and I'm just sorry we are now not at Foxhall for two weeks until we meet Poole on June 9."

LAKESIDE have been relieved to hear that star rider Andreas Jonsson sustained no serious injuries in his horrific crash during the Swedish Grand Prix - and he should be fit to ride for the Hammers in their crunch clash with Poole on Friday.

Co-promoter Jon Cook said: "It seems certain he’ll be riding this week which is remarkable when you reflect on the crash. Everyone held their breath watching it!

"I was relieved in particular to hear that the X-rays showed he had not broken any bones in his back, and he'll ride for us providing he gets through Tuesday in Sweden without any ill effects."

PETERBOROUGH manager Trevor Swales says the manner of the club's home win over Wolverhampton despite being without broken-leg victim Kenneth Bjerre was their most satisfying of the campaign so far.

Swales said: "We have one of our top riders missing through injury at the moment and that increases the burden on the other lads, but they responded really well.

"I have not been this proud of my riders all season and hopefully it can be the beginning of an upward surge for us."

POOLE promoter Matt Ford is hoping a week's rest will see Australian star Chris Holder fit to return to the Pirates side for important matches against Eastbourne and Lakeside this week.

Ford said: "He really is struggling to breathe properly. When he came back to the pits and got off his bike last Wednesday he couldn't even lift his leg. So he'll take the complete week off and hope that does the trick.

"There is nothing else he can do because there isn't anything broken. It is just time that will heal this. A week's grace might just be what he needs."

SWINDON co-owner Gary Patchett says the club will not contemplate making panic moves after seeing their unbeaten home record smashed by Poole last week.

Patchett said: "I can't tell you that we will or won't change things, just that we might. What we won't do is change for change sake.

"There's no point unless what you do is a step in the right direction and improves what you already have. The gulf between the two sides was vast on Thursday, but we both know that wasn't a true reflection of our own side's ability."

WOLERHAMPTON star Niels Kristian Iversen is desperate to be back in action for the Danish Grand Prix on June 14.

Iversen suffered a dislocated shoulder in the Swedish GP at the weekend and has been told he needs a month off.

But he said: “Copenhagen is my target. I’m so sorry about this injury, I know it’s come at a bad time for Wolverhampton.”

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST…

BERWICK'S new signings Paul Clews and Tony Atkin both scored well on their debuts against Scunthorpe - but the Bandits have further injury problems with Tero Aarnio and Scott Smith now on the sidelines.

Promoter Peter Waite said: "I want a version of my dream team back soon, for that was an awesome performance to be eight down and win so very well. The lads all need a massive pat on the back. I will be looking at the injuries and will release news once we have a plan that will work to cover their absences."

BIRMINGHAM skipper Jason Lyons continued his superb run of form with another impressive display as an Elite League guest for former club Belle Vue.

Lyons scored 9+1 in the 48-45 defeat by Wolverhampton and included two successive wins.

Brummies boss Graham Drury said: “It just underlines what a class act Jason is. He’s been brilliant for us and he’s proved he can still do it in the Elite League.”

EDINBURGH will be hit by the World Under-21 Championship this weekend, with Thomas H Jonasson set to miss both legs of their Knockout Cup clash with Redcar, and high-scoring reserve Andrew Tully out of the home meeting.

Promoter John Campbell said: "We simply won't find anyone as good as Andrew at the moment. He is disappointed to miss his home leg but promised me he will score a maximum at Redcar to make up for it!"

GLASGOW co-promoter Alan Dick is looking forward to the boost the Tigers will enjoy when young Australian Josh Grajczonek is declared fit to return to the team.

Dick said: "Josh is due to return in a couple of weeks and he is feeling a lot better, so fingers crossed it may not be too many more weeks after that for his return."

PAUL Fry hopes to return to the Isle of Wight team for the re-arranged fixture at Berwick this weekend after being injured in the initial staging of the meeting earlier this month.

Co-promoter Dave Pavitt said: "Paul tells us that he's making good progress, and he is confident of being fit for our away matches this weekend at firstly Berwick and then Newcastle."

KING'S LYNN co-promoter Jonathan Chapman says the club's faith in their team is being vindicated as they make progress from an up-and-down start to the season.

Chapman said: "There were never going to be any knee jerk reactions. We feel we have seven riders committed to the team. We could see things like averages were improving and it wasn't as if one rider was doing so badly that you can put everything on them."

MILDENHALL'S Danish youngster Jan Graversen is hoping to make a rapid comeback from injury this weekend.

Fen Tigers manager Laurence Rogers said: "Jan is out for up to three weeks with ligament and muscle damage on one shoulder, but despite that he is hoping to line up in his under-21 qualifier at Pori in Finland on Saturday. He probably shouldn't ride, but you can't tell speedway riders that!"

NEWCASTLE have snapped up talented teenager Jerran Hart after Newport's withdrawal from the Premier League, with Jamie Robertson set to race in the Conference League with Scunthorpe after making way in the Diamonds' team.

Co-promoter Darryl Illingworth said: "Lakeside promoter Jon Cook, who knows a potential hotshot when he sees one, says Jerran has a very bright future and will benefit from Premier League experience with us this year. Jon has waived a loan fee for Jerran, but says he wants him back when the lad achieves an eight-point average."

READING will monitor the fitness of reserve Danny Warwick, who is likely to be out of action with a shoulder injury until late June.

Promoter Malcolm Holloway said: "Danny went for a CT scan and has been told to report back to the hospital in a month's time. It's not ideal and we don't intend to drop him, but at least with signing Nicki (Glanz) we will have seven riders again and it will eliminate the need to keep looking for guests."

REDCAR returned to winning ways after disappointing away defeats at Reading and the Isle of Wight by winning at Glasgow on Sunday.

Bears manager Brian Havelock had hinted at team changes after describing the Smallmead defeat in particular as "not good enough" - but Adam McKinna proved to be an inspired choice of guest at Ashfield as he scored paid 13.

RYE HOUSE manager John Sampford says he is encouraged by the performances of youngster Daniel Halsey who has gained opportunities with the Rockets due to their lower-order injury problems.

Sampford said: "It's a massive learning curve for him. He's not disgraced himself, scored a few points predominantly at home I know, but he is going to some circuits he'd never seen before."

SCUNTHORPE promoter Rob Godfrey is tipping Edinburgh as potential Premier League champions after seeing the Monarchs scorch to a 14-point win at the Eddie Wright Raceway on Monday.

Godfrey said: "We were beaten by a great side today. From number one to number seven they are awesome and I think they’ll win the league. However, as I said last week, we will be making changes to the team to strengthen it up."

SHEFFIELD are refusing to press the panic button after losing their unbeaten home re cord to Workington.

Skipper Andre Compton said: “It’s a setback but that’s all it is. We can bounce back from this and just put it down as one of those nights.”

SOMERSET star Jason Doyle says that the Rebels are enjoying proving the critics wrong as they ride high at the top of the Premier League table.

Doyle said: "I read at the start of the season that not many people gave Somerset much of a chance of winning anything this year, especially with the difficulties that Mike Golding had with his team plans. But we are out to prove everyone wrong in virtually writing us off before the season had even started."

STOKE promoter Dave Tattum said the Potters restored some pride at Workington on Monday - but the manner of their display at home 48 hours beforehand could still force him into action.

Tattum said: "I have to look at the bigger picture and just keep my options open. There was more effort at Workington but our home performance on Saturday was nowhere near good enough and I have to consider the supporters' and sponsors' views in all this."

WORKINGTON have signed Finnish international Tomi Reima to replace the seriously injured Barry Burchatt, and he is expected to make his debut against Sheffield on Saturday.

Reima has been recommended by fellow countryman Kauko Nieminen, and has previous Derwent Park experience from way back in 2001 when he scored eight points for a Finnish Select side.
