ALL SQUARE IN CUMBRIA

Saturday May 31, 2008
SHEFFIELD came from behind in a thrilling contest against Workington to register a well-deserved 45-45 Premier League draw at Derwent Park.

The Tigers were left licking their wounds following last week’s home defeat against the Comets, but a last heat victory by skipper Andre Compton ensured they left Cumbria with a share of the points in Saturday night’s return encounter.

Eric Boocock's men got off to a bright start with a Ricky Ashworth and Paul Cooper 4-2 in heat 1, but despite a 5-1 reverse in heat 2, they immediately regained the lead with five points of their own from Compton and Lee Smethills in heat 3.

The home side drew level in heat 5 and with the teams exchanging heat advantages the scores were still locked at 24-24 with eight races completed.

Workington looked as if they may pull away with it as they led by six after heat 10, but Sheffield came fighting back and Cooper and Smethills levelled things up with a 4-2 over Joe Haines and Charles Wright in the penultimate race.

When the tapes lifted on the climax of a great night’s entertainment, Compton led all the way, but unfortunately Kauko Nieminen and Daniel Nermark thwarted the Tigers hopes of a shock away win by keeping Ashworth at bay in fourth place.

WORKINGTON 45: Joe Haines 14+1, Kauko Nieminen 13, Daniel Nermark 8+2, Tomi Reima 5, Charles Wright 3, John Branney 2+1, Carl Stonehewer (rider-replacement)

SHEFFIELD 45: Andre Compton 12, Paul Cooper 8+2, Ben Wilson 8, Ricky Ashworth 7, Lee Smethills 6+1, Joel Parsons 4, Ben Hopwood 0
