SCUNTHORPE 43 SHEFFIELD 47

Friday August 15, 2008
SHEFFIELD survived a last-heat decider to register an impressive 47-43 victory at Scunthorpe’s Normandy Road on Friday evening.

The Tigers led by two points going into the decisive race and they had skipper Andre Compton and Joel Parsons to thank, as their 4-2 over Scorpions duo Carl Wilkinson and Richard Hall sealed a well-deserved win for the Yorkshire side.

Sheffield looked set to run away with things early on as they opened up a ten-point lead after heat 4, but the home side quickly pulled within two-points with successive 5-1s in heats 5 and 6.

There was drama in heat 8 when both Josh Grajczonek and Victor Bergstrom collided on the back-straight of the opening lap and crashed heavily into the Normandy Road safety fence. The injured riders were taken to hospital and both subsequently took no further part in the meeting.

When racing resumed, Paul Cooper maintained the Tigers slender two-point lead when defeating Byron Bekker and Ben Powell, but the Scorpions restored parity with a 4-2 in heat 10 from Hall and Powell.

A 5-1 in heat 11 from Ben Wilson and Cooper saw the Yorkshiremen go back in front, but Scunthorpe drew level again with a five-pointer of their own in heat 13 from Wilkinson and Hall.

Four-points from Parsons and Kyle Hughes made sure the Tigers went into the last heat decider with a two-point advantage, and the points were secured for Eric Boocock’s men in the climatic heat with the 4-2 from Compton and Parsons.
