BATTLE OF THE ROSES

Friday January 23, 2009
SHEFFIELD and Belle Vue are set to go head-to-head on the eve of the season in a challenge match with a difference.

The two clubs will be taking part in a Question of Speedway quiz at the Aces' Kirkmanshulme Lane stadium on Monday, March 9 (7.30pm).

The four-man teams will be made up from the respective managements and backroom staffs and they will lock-horns in what will effectively be speedway's own 'Battle of the Roses'.

Steve Casey, one of the organisers, said: "This will be a social with a difference to kick-start the new season and we are looking forward to an entertaining night, even though the quiz will be a serious business with both sides very keen to win it."

Belle Vue boss, David Gordon, said: "We aim to do things in the correct and proper manner, but not only will we be representing our club, but also Manchester, and the entire Elite League.

“We will be perfect hosts to Sheffield, but once the buzzer goes then the competition will start. We aim to win!"

Tigers promoter Neil Machin retorted: "Belle Vue may be an Elite League club, but we at Sheffield are proud of our reputation as one of the top clubs in our league."

Further details and team line-ups will be announced shortly.
