LYON NAMED GB BOSS

Thursday February 12, 2009
ROB Lyon is the new Great Britain Speedway boss.

Lyon, 43, impressed the sport’s bosses during a series of interviews at their Warwickshire HQ after a long line of success with Premier League King’s Lynn.

He will remain in charge of the Norfolk club at the same time as leading Great Britain into this summer’s World Cup campaign… which includes an event at Peterborough’s East of England Showground.

Lyons will also be tapping into the expertise of former Great Britain stars Chris Louis and Mark Loram to help with the team’s development.

He said: “This is a very proud moment for me, I am delighted to have been handed the role of national team manager.

“It’s a long-term plan, we are realistic about where we are now with the team and we are also realistic enough to know we have a lot of exciting young riders coming through who can make the step up in the next three or four years.

“With the help of people like Chris Louis, Mark Loram and the Great Britain under-21 coaches we can stick together and take the team forward.”

British Speedway chairman Peter Toogood said: “Rob is a thoroughly professional person who impressed us greatly with his passion and knowledge.

“His success at King’s Lynn underlines how well he connects with his riders and I’m sure the same will apply with Great Britain. We wish him well on the role.”
