ELITE LEAGUE LATEST...

BELLE VUE will take a five-point lead into the home leg of their Knockout Cup quarter-final against Poole after a stunning win at Wimborne Road last week.

Aces manager Chris Morton said: "This was a brilliant effort by the boys but I am keeping a lid on it because we've got to do the same again in the second leg.

"Charlie Gjedde did a great job at reserve, and Patrick Hougaard was outstanding with four wins. Everyone stepped up to the plate."

COVENTRY star Edward Kennett accepted that the Bees had been unable to overcome the strength of Swindon's top two as the Robins prevailed for the fourth time out of four meetings this season.

Kennett said: "I thought the boys did quite well, but we do need to sort things out a bit more because time is running away.

"Adams and Zagar are so quick and it's very hard to beat them. They looked fast at Coventry and they were fast here. I think they'll be capable of getting 5-1s at most tracks in the Elite League."

EASTBOURNE star David Norris remains on the sidelines and had to cancel plans to practice last week.

Norris has a substantial cover on third-degree burns suffered to his arm, and is also having problems with his wrist - which could lead the Eagles to consider signing a new rider.

Norris said: "At the moment there is no way I can hang on to a speedway bike. The club have got to move forward, and I've told (promoter) Bob Dugard to do what he has to do."

IPSWICH rider-manager Chris Louis has confirmed that father John is set to step down as promoter next year - although he says his own succession to that position is not a given.

Louis said: "In 2010 there will be a new person at the helm. At the moment it could be me, but it is certainly not guaranteed.

"I don't have any reservations about running a speedway club, but to be competitive in the Elite League you need to raise plenty of funds. It is a big financial burden and I need to think carefully about things."

LAKESIDE's mixed fortunes this season were summed up by a home defeat against Wolverhampton, an emphatic away win at Ipswich the following night, and then a narrow defeat at Belle Vue from which the Hammers gained a point.

Co-promoter Jon Cook said: "Always in speedway you are looking at ways to find where you can get ahead and get slightly better, but I wouldn't want to drop anyone out of this team.

"Overall I'm proud of what we have done and achieved, and hopefully we can keep improving and progressing. I'm delighted with the way things are in the camp at present."

PETERBOROUGH co-manager Wayne Swales says his side can still mount a challenge for the Elite League title - but they must improve on their recent results, which included a home defeat against Wolverhampton.

Swales said: "I don't think we can say we have kissed goodbye to our dream of winning the title at this stage of the season, but it is blatantly obvious we need to perform better than we have of late.

"There is no way we should be losing home meetings and there is no way you are going to be in contention to win titles when not getting the results on your own track."

POOLE star Chris Holder came through his weekend racing unscathed and will return to the Pirates' line-up for Wednesday's home fixture against Wolverhampton.

Holder said: "When I fell against Lakeside two weeks ago I thought I’d messed it up with regard to the Grand Prix.

"I’m still not 100 per cent perfect. It’s only been four weeks since I did it, so in another couple of weeks I should be back to 100 per cent."

SWINDON'S impressive away win at Eastbourne on Monday was achieved without Croatian youngster Jurica Pavlic, who has been banned for 28-days after failing to show for the Robins' home match against Coventry last week.

Manager Alun Rossiter said: "It's not acceptable. He told me he doesn't want to do the Grand Prix qualification, but he was under pressure from his Dad's track and the Croatian federation.

"He needs to go away now and think what he wants to do, because we're not going to put up with it."

WOLVERHAMPTON manager Peter Adams is delighted with the club's current Elite League position, which was further enhanced by away wins at Lakeside and Peterborough last week.

Adams said: "It was a magnificent week for us, ruined only by the torrential thunderstorm we had on Monday teatime which wiped our meeting with Peterborough out.

"I wonder when a visiting team last went to Peterborough and provided six race winners and had one rider score a five-ride maximum? Freddie (Lindgren) was something special and has been all season."

PREMIER LEAGUE LATEST...

BERWICK co-promoter John Andersen said some unexpected bike trouble for Czech star Josef Franc had prevented the Bandits from taking points out of their recent away match at Stoke.

Anderson said: “We came so close to getting a result at Stoke, and I think had we not suffered some rare mechanical problems for the usually completely reliable Pepe then who knows what might have been.”

BIRMINGHAM skipper Jason Lyons has praised colleague Tomasz Piszcz after the two combined to win major silverware for the Brummies at the Premier League Pairs.

Lyons said: "Tomasz is a very good, tough rider, and I know how popular he is with the Birmingham fans. He is now part of the club's history having won a trophy."

EDINBURGH boss John Campbell has confirmed that talks are ongoing with a mystery rider to replace Thomas H Jonasson in the Monarchs’ squad.

Campbell said: “We are progressing but we are a distance away from a deal being concluded. He speaks little English, but the fact that he is considering our offer suggests he is reasonably excited about the prospect of riding in the Premier League.”

GLASGOW skipper Shane Parker became the latest Tigers rider to be hurt when he was taken to hospital for checks on his back after crashing in his first ride during last Friday's Premier League Pairs.

Parker was subsequently released with no broken bones, but he has severe bruising and therefore missed the defeat at Rye House on Sunday.

KING’S Lynn promoter Keith Chapman admits he is concerned about Rye House’s strength at reserve for Wednesday’s clash at the Norfolk Arena, along with their choice of Carl Wilkinson to replace the injured Joe Haines.

Chapman said: “I can see some potential in their team to come here and do very well. I will warn (manager) Rob (Lyon) to put the riders on full alert as I don’t want us to slip up, we are out to win this year’s league and we must start climbing back up the table right now.”

NEWCASTLE co-promoter Darryl Illingworth is convinced the Diamonds have the ability to shoot up the Premier League table over the coming weeks.

Illingworth said: "We are going to be so much better once we are back into the swing of regular racing. I have a gut feeling come September it might be King’s Lynn and ourselves who are battling for the league title."

NEWPORT have made a major revamp of their team by signing Leigh Lanham and Swedish youngster Jonas Andersson, and releasing skipper Mark Lemon and Brent Werner.

Manager Laurence Rogers said: "'It is not always easy being handed the task of telling riders that their services are no longer required but the club owners felt that the season had to be turned around after the inconsistent results so far. Newport fans can be reassured from these decisive actions that we are planning ahead."

REDCAR promoter Brian Havelock is looking for increased consistency from his team – although he accepts that several other clubs are in the same position!

Havelock said: “I don’t think it’s just us, other teams are the same. When we were at Cleveland Park you’d have two riders in the team who would score eight, 10, 12 points every week. That just doesn’t seem to happen any more.”

RYE HOUSE reserve Luke Bowen marked his final match before moving up into the main body of the Rockets' team with an impressive paid-12 haul in the weekend win over Glasgow.

Bowen said: "I messed up my first ride but after that it all went really well. The best one had to be Heat 11 against Tomas Topinka. I really enjoy beating the top boys – that’s what it’s all about and it’s what keeps the crowd happy!"

SCUNTHORPE's new signing Adam Allott will make his home debut against Workington on Friday, with the Scorpions hoping to take advantage of his fast-starting ability.

Promoter Rob Godfrey said: "We know we'll go to tracks where he will gate and no-one will pass him. I believe we've taken the only decent option open to us at this time. e have been speaking to a couple of Danish riders, but they're not ready to commit to racing over here at this time."

SHEFFIELD owner Neil Machin believes the standard of entertainment on offer at Owlerton is second to none.

Tigers have shown a big improvement in recent weeks and their home form continues to be solid.

Said Machin: "We have to be happy with the way things are ticking over and we're seeing some terrific racing at Owlerton these days."

SOMERSET are weighing up their options for signing a new rider with up to a 5.29 average after parting company with Jay Herne last week.

General manager David Croucher said: "We are actively seeking a suitable rider to strengthen up the team for the remainder of the season. In the event that no such rider becomes available immediately, we have a contingency plan in place to bring a temporary replacement on board."

STOKE reserve Tom P Madsen top-scored in the Potters’ 49-41 win over Berwick which saw the Loomer Road side advance to second place in the Premier League table.

Madsen said: “The main thing though is that the team keeps winning and that we keep picking up three points at home and hopefully the confidence from the home performances will stand us in good stead for the away matches coming up.”

WORKINGTON just missed out on the chance to retain the Premier League Pairs at Somerset, as their combination of Kevin Doolan and Adrian Rymel were eliminated in the semi-finals.

Acting manager Tony Jackson said: “The boys were disappointed not to have made the final but our record in the competition is outstanding and we again made the podium. We were probably a bit unlucky in the semi-final against Somerset.”

NATIONAL LEAGUE action continues and all the latest club press releases are now available at the news section on our website www.speedwaygb.com
