TIGERS 42 EDINBURGH 51

Thursday September 17, 2009
TIGERS will have to settle for a place in the Jack Young Shield after seeing their promotion hopes ended in Thursday's 51-42 defeat by reigning champions Edinburgh at Owlerton.

The Sheffield Window Centre-backed side needed to notch all three points on offer to keep their outside hopes of a top four finish alive - but it all went wrong.

It all started to go wrong in only the first race when skipper Ricky Ashworth barged through the tapes and was excluded.

But his side rallied and a 5-1 from Scott Smith and Chris Mills put them in front at 7-5, although it was the only time they led in the match.

As Tigers watched points drain away, compounded when Richard Hall slammed into team-mate Smith in heat 7 and could take no further part in the meeting, the impressive Monarchs clicked into gear.

Three 5-1s inside three mid-match heats put them six points in the clear... and they never looked back as they secured a second away win in successive nights after collecting four-points at Birmingham 24-hours earlier.
